We talk a lot about the different features and perks of various operating systems and the programs that work on them. There's often a decent amount of coherence between similar systems (or even similar versions of the same systems). But there’s one area that one Linux system vs. another, or Ubuntu vs. Windows can bring about problems, and that's gaming.

Historically speaking, online and mobile games work better on some platforms than others. That isn’t to say there’s not plenty of crossover, particularly when it comes to mobile. The app stores for Android and iOS devices have a great deal of overlap in regard to games. But in general some systems work better for games than others—to the point that it’s not surprising to see conversations about the best Linux systems for gaming, or the best Ubuntu game offerings.

SuperTuxKart is a free 3D kart racing game featuring  many open source project characters and mascots. It's a fun game which make us addicted to it from playing again and again especially if you have friends to join in multiplayer "battle". We can play up to 4 characters in one PC, and a network multiplayer is planned for future release.

DreadOut is an Indonesian indie horror game which brings a supernatural adventure to its player. A group of high school students stray from their vacation trip, they discover an old deserted town. They realize that there is something weird as they are entering the town. Linda as the main character in this game feels a mystical power within herself. This mystical or spiritual power might can save her and her friends from unknown evil in the town.

Dead Cyborg is a first person sci-fi adventure game created with Blender Engine. The game is a mixture of a FPS exploration and text adventure. Dead Cyborg contains atmospheric locations, deep storyline and mind-blowing puzzles for players who’ll like to visit an elaborate, unique storyworld. There is no action in this game, all you need to do are explore, search, and think! The first episode of the game was released a couple years ago, and this second episode is a next sequel of Dead Cyborg. The game will be published with 2-4 hours of playing per episode. Dead Cyborg is donation based game, so a new episode will be released when enough donation is paid. The full game will have 3 episodes, so there is one more episode of Dead Cyborg will be released, there is no endless story or something like that.

If you are looking for a short game to waste your time, you should give "One Late Night" a try. "One Late Night" is a short 3D horror game experience which is available for Linux, Windows, and Mac freely. It means you can play it natively on Linux with no emulator needed.

Gamescaster is a front-end (graphical user interface) of open-source Framework "GLC". Gamecaster is able to record any games which uses ALSA for audio and OpenGL for drawing on the screen. The recorded video is in 'glc' format but Gamecaster can convert it into WebM format.

Linux Tycoon is the first and the only Linux Distro Building Simulator Game in the world. It takes the fun parts of building Linux distro. Linux Tycoon is free, open source, and licensed under the GPL. It's also available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X operating system.

Desura is a great application (and service) especially for those who likes indie games. It's available on Windows and Linux. By using Desura, you can browse, search, buy (there are many free games though), and install games on your computer. It also helps you to manage, update, and even install new mods easily. Just install and play!

GCompris is a high quality educational game contains many educative activities for children aged 2 to 10 years old. It divided into some categories, each category contains many activities:

  • computer discovery: keyboard, mouse, different mouse gesture, ...
  • algebra: table memory, enumeration, double entry table, mirror image, ...
  • science: the canal lock, the water cycle, the submarine, electric simulation ...
  • geography: place the country on the map
  • games: chess, memory, connect 4, oware, sudoku ...

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a First Person Shooter (FPS) game which can run native on Linux. It's a free and opensource online multiplayer game set during World War II and was originally planned to be released as a commercial expansion pack to the popular FPS game Return to Castle and later as a standalone game.


Lugaru (pronounced Loo-GAH-roo) is a DRM-free, third-person action game available for Mac, Windows, and Linux. The main character, Turner, is an anthropomorphic rebel bunny rabbit with impressive combat skills. In his quest to find those responsible for slaughtering his village, he uncovers a far-reaching conspiracy involving the corrupt leaders of the rabbit republic and the starving wolves from a nearby den. Turner takes it upon himself to fight against their plot and save his fellow rabbits from slavery.

Dead Cyborg is Sci-Fi based adventure game. Is is free to play, you can play it whenever you want but don't forget to donate if you like it :) It has an easy game play, there is no action just adventure. All you need to do is explore, search and think. Dead Cyborg is divided into episodes, each episode can be finished in 2 - 3 hours. When this article is written, Dead Cyborg has finished episode 1 and episode 2 is in 65% progress.
