One of most important things to do with operating system and any major of software is keeping it up-to-date to the latest feature to make sure we have the latest feature, improvements, bug fixes, and more! System update can be very crucial if it is related with security stuff. Imagine if there is a security hole in an operating system so the wrong hand can access your files, password, and any secret stuff on your computer. Although Ubuntu which is one of many Linux distributions is known as a secure operating system, you should not underestimate a system update, especially an update with related to security stuff. In Ubuntu, you can do a security update via command line or any GUI which provides an easy user interface to perform a system update, but you should do that manually so it can be a troublesome activity. So, today I'd like to share a simple trick so you can perform security update automatically, it also called "unattended upgrade".
I have a written about the latest XFCE Terminal which adds drop down Terminal functionality like Guake or Yakuake. As far as I know, Thunar file manager comes with "Open Terminal Here" context menu. You can see it by right clicking on any folder from Thunar File Manager.

In many places or public facilities such as public library, university, airport, restaurant, and even mini market, there might be a free Wifi access so we can connect to the Internet with our laptop. Unfortunately, most of that free stuff comes with limitation for each connection (time limited or bandwidth limited). Once you reached the limit, you'll be disconnected or not be able to use the Internet. There are may workaround to cheat with that, one of them is changing MAC Address.

We all already know how to hide files and folders on Ubuntu. Yes, simply append "." dot character at the beginning of the file or folder name. In case, you have to hide many files or folders, this method will take a long time because you have to rename them one by one to append "." (dot) to them. But don't worry, there is another way to hide them, mmm, faster way :IMHO.
If you have been using Google Chrome, you should be familiar with its native PDF viewer. Google Chrome allows us to view PDF directly in the browser without no need to open external application. As we all know, doing "hard reset" frequently will cause damages on hardware especially hard disk, correct me if I', wrong. So, is there any "proper" way to restart freezing Ubuntu? Yes, there is. We can use "Magic SysRq Key" to perform clean restart on freezing system. The Sysrq key is located near the Scroll Lock key on the keyboard and it's generally the same as Print Screen key.

To do this job some aplication that need to install are unoconv, LibreOffice, and Ubuntu 11.04 or more, why you need an Ubuntu 11.04 or more because the previous version (of Libreoffice/OpenOffice) is not support for docx and xlsx document.

In my opinion, the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS unity is much better than ever. It's fast, stable, and easy-to-use. But I still don't like the Unity launcher which waste my screen space. How do I remove it? Actually, we can remove Unity launcher without removing the whole Unity desktop, but we still can hide it and remains hidden even we put mouse pointer on the left side of screen.
Guest account is default account that exist in Ubuntu which used for additional user which is not registered in the system, Guest account have an access to the desktop, using all application that installed, but having limited access to the system setting. if you feel guest account might not needed may you can disable it, do as follow :
in my computer, lightdm.conf is looks like the following :

Not only Ubuntu, sometimes we needed to work with other OS like windows in office or somewhere else. When we're not face directly with our computer (Ubuntu), can we monitor it ?, yes, you can !, you can do it via remote desktop connection.
Ubuntu as a part of Linux has provide some ports which commonly used as remote protocol, that is ssh (port 22) and telnet (port 21). If you are accustomed to use terminal you can use both of port above, but if you are not accustomed to, you can do it via VNC.
What is VNC ?
Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a graphical desktop sharing system that uses the RFB protocol to remotely control another computer. It transmits the keyboard and mouse events from one computer to another, relaying the graphical screen updates back in the other direction, over a network. VNC is platform-independent – a VNC viewer on one operating system may connect to a VNC server on the same or any other operating system, (Wikipedia).
