Tor and DNSCrypt on Ubuntu 18.04 Made Easy

(Ubuntu Bionic connected to the internet via Tor and it's easy to setup)

This simple tutorial will show you to install two privacy tools, The Onion Router (TOR) and Dnscrypt-Proxy, on Ubuntu Bionic Beaver. We will make use of existing Mozilla Firefox browser instead and just configure system wide proxy using Ubuntu System Settings. We do not install Tor Browser or any other additional stuffs to make everything simple for everybody. Okay, let's go!

Step By Step To Upgrade Ubuntu from 18.04 to 19.04 using Command Lines

(Ubuntu 19.04 after upgrade from 18.04 LTS)

This is tutorial to upgrade your Ubuntu from 18.04 LTS to 19.04 using 'do-release-upgrade' command lines. The upgrade process is divided to two steps, first to upgrade to 18.10, and second to upgrade to 19.04. In other words, we will upgrade from Bionic Beaver to Cosmic Cuttlefish to Disco Dingo. The whole process takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes on broadband internet connection and Solid State Disk (SSD) storage. Go ahead and have a safe upgrade. Finally, happy working!

Lubuntu 18.04 and 18.10: Between LXDE and LXQt

This is a review comparing two versions of Lubuntu, 18.04 LTS with LXDE and 18.10 with LXQt. It's about Bionic Beaver and Cosmic Cuttlefish. This means this is the last review of Lubuntu with LXDE. You will find here how they differ in cases of appearance, default applications set, file manager, network manager, package manager, and so on. Very fortunate for us that both version (and even next version Disco Dingo) keep supporting 32-bit architecture so we can still use any of them on our oldest PCs or Macintosh possible. They're only between +/-250 and +/-350MB in RAM usage. They're lightweight, computer-reviving, and compete operating systems worth to try. Go ahead, happy reading and happy working with Lubuntu!

GNU/Linux Review: Xubuntu 18.04 LTS

Xubuntu 18.04 LTS is an official flavor of Ubuntu Bionic Beaver which uses XFCE Desktop Environment. In this release, it's still as lightweight as before (~350MB of RAM at idle time), with user-friendliness you can expect as always. Yes, it still supports 32-bit so you don't have to buy new computer to upgrade or install it; for the next 3 years. It supports Snappy out of the box with GNOME Software integration. It brings Firefox 59, LibreOffice 6.0, and XFCE 4.12 for us, in only 1.3GB sized ISO image file. And yeah, in this review, I show you that Compiz works here with 3D Cube and stuffs we really missed from our old Ubuntu era. Read the review below and I hope you will like it. Enjoy Xubuntu Bionic!

How To Install Xubuntu 18.04

This is a beginner's installation guide for Xubuntu 18.04 LTS. This includes how to install it in UEFI computer in case you have one. You will prepare two partitions as main and swap, plus, one small partition called EFI of 200MB if your computer uses UEFI, and continue the rest of steps available. An Overview of UKUI Desktop Environment on Ubuntu Kylin 18.04

UKUI is a new desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating system. It's best known to be the user interface of Ubuntu Kylin, one of official Ubuntu Flavors, hence we can guess the name stands for Ubuntu Kylin User Interface (hence I still didn't find any source about it). Along with it, of course, Ubuntu Kylin 18.04 LTS has been released last April with the latest UKUI. Kubuntu: Change MAC Address and Keep It with NetworkManager

On Kubuntu 16.04 and 18.04, you can insert a custom MAC Address into a certain Wifi Hotspot connection right within the NetworkManager tray. For example, if you always connected to --let's call it-- @wifi.id hotspot on the wifi.id public places, you want to connect with a custom MAC address, then this tutorial is for you. This article discusses the tactic to make you able to use MAC as an account ("seamless" service) on public wifi places. The goal is for you to not manually change MAC every time you connect to that hotspot. Just configure once, use forever. Happy connecting!

Change Default Applications on Ubuntu 18.04

You can easily re-associate between files and programs to open it on Ubuntu 18.04. Also, you can change the default web browser and mail client if you have the alternatives. For example, to open JPEG photo on Shotwell instead of Image Viewer. To do that: right-click on the file > Properties > Open With > select the program Shotwell available there > Set As Default. Now all JPEG photos will open on Shotwell.

Go to Open With > select the program

Then, if you have alternative browsers, let's take example between Mozilla Firefox and Epiphany Browser (GNOME Web), you can turn Epiphany Browser instead to be the default easily by going to main menu > Default Applications:

Finally, if you also have alternative mail clients, for example between Mozilla Thunderbird and Claws Mail, you can turn Claws Mail to be the default one by the same menu:

How To Install Iridium Browser on Ubuntu 18.04

This short tutorial shows how to install Iridium, the privacy and security powered browser, on Ubuntu 18.04. Remember that Iridium is only available for 64 bit, no official 32 bit available.

1) Add the repository key of Iridium:

$ wget -qO - https://downloads.iridiumbrowser.de/ubuntu/iridium-release-sign-01.pub | sudo apt-key add -

2) Add the repository into a new sources.list:

You can add only the first one below. However, the second one is the source code repository and you can add it (and remove the # to enable it) if you need it.

$ echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://downloads.iridiumbrowser.de/deb/ stable main" | sudo tee --append /etc/apt/sources.list.d/iridium-browser.list 

$ echo "#deb-src https://downloads.iridiumbrowser.de/deb/ stable main" | sudo tee --append /etc/apt/sources.list.d/iridium-browser.list

3) Reload your repository index:

$ sudo apt-get update

4) Install Iridium Browser:

$ sudo apt-get install iridium-browser

Kubuntu 18.04 LTS Review: The Friendly Operating System

Honestly, Kubuntu 18.04 has been released at 26 April 2018, and I need a long time to make a review. Last but not least, here's a review of Kubuntu Bionic Beaver, the friendly operating system of 2018, an LTS version worth 3 years of support with KDE Plasma 5.12 and full of features.

It needs only +/-370MiB of RAM at idle time, considerably lightweight along with Xubuntu and Lubuntu. You will find also my notes about the default applications and more here. Finally, for you curious about Kubuntu, here's my review!

How To Install Zekr Quran Reader on Ubuntu 18.04 and Configure Its Font

This tutorial explains how to install Zekr on 18.04 and configure a good font for it. You will need to download the Zekr program itself, install Java on your system then, and finally install Zekr correctly. And, I suggest you here to use Amiri Quran font with Zekr because I find it's the best for now. Don't worry, although Zekr is not present anymore in the Bionic repository, we still can install it manually by these instructions. Have a good reading!

What To Do After Installing Kubuntu 18.04

After you have installed Kubuntu 18.04, here's a list of recommended things to reconfigure your KDE Plasma Desktop involving changing theme and click behavior, customizing menu and panel, using workspaces and adding custom shortcut keys; with a short list of recommended applications including internet privacy tools for you. Most things in this list do not need internet connection so you can execute them without worrying. I compile this traditionally released list especially for new users coming from another operating system with the hope this will be useful for all Kubuntu users. Enjoy!

GNU/Linux Review: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" has been released at Thursday, 26 April 2018 by announcements in their mailing list and Release Notes. After installing Bionic on my laptop since the Beta 1 and Beta 2, here's my report: it uses around 1.2GiB of RAM at least; it brings LibreOffice 6, Firefox 59, and GNOME 3.28 by default; still using Ubiquity as graphical installer. The biggest difference to previous LTS is it no longer uses Unity 7 desktop, so no HUD, no global menu anymore. It is powerful and still very easy to use like before, but needs more powerful hardware. The rest of this review explains those for you with additional links if you want to learn further. Enjoy!
