After using it for a week, here's intro to 5 of my favorite apps from AppCenter on elementary OS 5.0 I've tried. So far it's Torrential (BitTorrent client), Spice-Up (presentation editor), DesktopFolder (icons on desktop), Notes-Up (document editor & notetaking program), and Screencast (desktop recorder). Four of them are paid apps, while still free/libre open source software, as I humbly support this approach of selling free software. I hope this article encourages more developers to join this elementary LLC's software publishing platform and encourages more users to appreciate paid free software and support them. Enjoy them, try them, and please share with your friend!

I like StartPage.com as my search engine but I don't find it as option on elementary OS 5.0 web browser. The options available there are only Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Google. Not to mention StartPage.com itself currently doesn't support Epiphany with addon. So I add it manually and hey, apparently it's very easy! Here's how to do it:

  • 1) Run the web browser (Epiphany)
  • 2) Open the gear menu button > Preferences
  • 3) Click manage search engine > click + button >
  • 4) Paste this URL there https://startpage.com/do/search?language=english&cat=web&query=%s
  • 5) Name it StartPage and close
  • 6) Test searching with it. It should now uses StartPage.com as your default search engine.

About StartPage

See their official intro here. It's pretty. Learn more about StartPage on PrivacyTools.io, PRISM BreakHackerNoon, RestorePrivacy.com, MyShadow.org, and BestVPN. It's recommended as a privacy-protecting search engine!

This short tutorial explains in brief to customize elementary OS 5.0 with Capitaine icons + Elementary-X theme combo. You see, this will make your OS looks like Apple macOS smoother. This combo is really beautiful, thanks to Keefer Rourke and Suraj Mandal, the talented developers of the respective artworks.

I also mention here a one-liner command so you can test this in instant (i.e. one tap on LiveCD session). Okay, enjoy this customization!

This is (again) the traditional article containing suggestions once a beginner finished installing Ubuntu and this time it's for 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish". In this article you'll not only find some usual things like enabling normal touchpad scrolling & privacy addons, but also some new things like Snappy intro, Hide Top Bar, and Android integration (with GS Connect)! Have nice days with Ubuntu Cosmic an GNOME 3.30!

On GNOME 3.30, especially on Ubuntu 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish", we can share our internet connection to our friends or phones by making a WLAN hotspot on laptop while we already have the access from another WLAN hotspot. Please remember this method requires you to have two wifi adapters (for example, one built-in and one USB dongle); one as receiver and one as transmitter. This short guide illustrates how to do it in very, very simple way. Enjoy!

This is the traditional welcome article "WTDAI" for elementary OS 5.0 which has been available to download three days ago (17 October 2018). Here, you'll find how to add network indicator applet on Wingpanel, install paid apps at no cost (and donate later if you wish), enable Night Light, adjust some power management, and finally --for app developers-- getting started in making elementary OS desktop apps! This article is just simple list for things I hope many will need and love it. I hope this article will help you a lot especially if you're just switched from other OS today. Enjoy!

Ubuntu 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish" released today Thursday, 18 October 2018 with the new user experience and latest desktop technology, including, GNOME 3.30, GTK+3.30, and Yaru Theme. The most shocking, but pleasing thing is it got reduced in RAM usage down to only ~800MiB after freshly installed (already lower than 1GiB)! It brings the latest Snappy with the rapidly increasing and growing Snapcraft.io App Store platform. It comes as the most user friendly operating system for PC and laptop with 9-month support lifespan (October '18-July '19). This traditional welcome article sums up some details and information in brief about this latest version. Download, install, give it a try, and enjoy 18.10!

It's Juno. It's the codename of the newly released elementary OS 5.0 on Wednesday, 17 October 2018; a continuation of the 0.4 Loki since 2016. The 5.0 is now rebased on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (which has been released last April). It brings a lot of new features, while keeping it's user experience design with more stability and strangely it's easier to RAM now. This short article covers what's changed.

This tutorial explains how to install Ubuntu 18.10 for beginners with an additional guide for computers with UEFI. This tutorial is applicable to all Official Flavors too (such as Kubuntu, Lubuntu, etc.) as the steps are actually not different. You will prepare two blank partitions first, then follow ten steps of installation. For systems with UEFI, like most laptops sold after 2010, you will need to create a 200MB EFI Partition. Anyway, enjoy Ubuntu 18.10, happy installing!

Since the beginning of 2018, precisely after we had the sophisticated Loki since 2016, we have been waited for Juno, the 5.0 version of elementary OS. Today, Wednesday, 17 October 2018, it's finally released and you can download it. This article brings the download links, torrents, checksum, and announcement info. I include short instructions on how to download for both direct and torrent ways as some users wonder how. Also, for historical purpose, I note here a summary of some links from the first announcement of Juno development from January this year up to last notice of Beta 2 last month. Anyway, happy downloading, happy using Juno, and please help seeding the torrent!

Xubuntu 18.04 LTS is an official flavor of Ubuntu Bionic Beaver which uses XFCE Desktop Environment. In this release, it's still as lightweight as before (~350MB of RAM at idle time), with user-friendliness you can expect as always. Yes, it still supports 32-bit so you don't have to buy new computer to upgrade or install it; for the next 3 years. It supports Snappy out of the box with GNOME Software integration. It brings Firefox 59, LibreOffice 6.0, and XFCE 4.12 for us, in only 1.3GB sized ISO image file. And yeah, in this review, I show you that Compiz works here with 3D Cube and stuffs we really missed from our old Ubuntu era. Read the review below and I hope you will like it. Enjoy Xubuntu Bionic!
