Elementary OS launched version 6 Beta a while ago so everybody can download, try, test and report issues to get involved in its public software development. Through this article, I invite dear Ubuntu Buzz readers to test this Beta version too. Most notable changes in this Beta version are Dark Theme, the new installer, a new app called Tasks, and the major shift to Flatpak for the App Center. Special for application developers, you are now advised to learn packaging your app as a Flatpak. However, this Beta version is still in rapid development and you are advised not to install it on your main computers as there are still issues and possibility to loss data. Finally, we are waiting for the next Release Candidate before the Stable Release. Let's try it together!

Unlike Windows, user interface in elementary OS has a name, and it is Pantheon Desktop. It is a beautifully designed and easy to use desktop environment. This article wants to be a user guide to Pantheon Desktop that is simple to read and practice. You will learn about basic concepts of Pantheon and then practice to use it for daily tasks. You will see here how to use Wingpanel (top panel), Slingshot (start menu), Plank (taskbar), Switchboard (system settings), plus understand Headerbars and Multitasking mode. Of course I also include frequently used Keyboard Shortcuts so you can work more quickly. For your information, I use elementary OS 5.0 Juno as basis of this tutorial. elementary OS 5.1 is a "service pack" update of 5.0 released recently at 3 December 2019. It brings really a lot of new features and redesigns. On GNOME we use Alacarte, on KDE we use KDE Menu Editor, on XFCE we use MenuLibre, but how to edit Applications Menu on elementary OS? For example, you run LibreOffice AppImage, but you cannot add it to start menu by drag-and-drop nor right-click on it. Then how to do that? It is easy, you may use either mentioned MenuLibre, or the native AppEditor. Finally I practiced this on version 5.0 Juno and it works. Try it and let's see if you love it. Enjoy!

Enso OS is a relatively new GNU/Linux distro based on Ubuntu with XFCE desktop coupled with Gala Window Manager. Looking at Enso is like looking at a mix between Xubuntu and elementary OS. It features a Super key start menu called Panther and a global menu on its top panel, making the interface very interesting to try. This overview briefly highlights the user interface for you. To enable dark theme on elementary OS 5.0 "Juno", simply use Elementary Tweaks and set Prefer Dark Variant on. But there are more ways, using command line instead or install new dark themes. And the is one more thing, that is giving the Plank Dock dark theme as well.

I use here themes like Elementary X, Deepin Dark, Flat Remix Yellow to show you several options we have today. Try it and happy working!

Right now, we can install the elementary OS desktop environment, Pantheon, on Fedora GNU/Linux. It is a new thing on Fedora as so far it, as RPM distro, does not have Pantheon in its repository. If you know Fedora now has Spins ("Flavors"), you know that up to today there is no Fedora Pantheon among those Live Systems available. It is planned to be added into Fedora 30 this year and fortunately we can test it now on Fedora 28 and 29. Why Fedora? Because the fact that Fedora still supports 32-bit, if Fedora supports Pantheon, then this solves problem that elementary OS only supports 64-bit computers. You who still have 32-bit laptops can run latest Pantheon desktop using Fedora. I use Fedora Live KDE 29 in this test. You can use this to help testing Pantheon desktop to work on Fedora. Big thanks to Felipe Escoto (Philip Scott) from Launchpad for creating a PPA for Elementary Tweaks for Loki. This tweaking program is suitable for you after installing elementary OS Loki. You can install it by doing these four command lines with total download around 100 KB.
