VLC is a complete video player with conversion features. If you already have VLC installed, you can convert videos & audios without additional software. The purpose of converting is mostly to reduce video size by changing the format to a lossy one, and by removing the audio track from it. It is very handy to do with VLC as shown below. Let's go!

This article guides you to record your screen + audio with Kazam in GNU/Linux. For short, this is how you can do screencasting in GNU/Linux, like what you do with Camtasia Studio or such program in Windows. Kazam is GUI based (no command line) and is very simple to use (has very few buttons) so I hope by reading this, soon you can do your screencastings in GNU/Linux. Enjoy.

Do you like to create some video tutorials? Are you using GNOME 3? Then just use EasyScreenCast extension to record the screen and your voice, into a video by just clicking a button in the top panel. Sounds interesting? Let we show you how here.

Mobile Media Converter is one of the most easy to use GUI program to convert any audio/video in GNU/Linux. In 1.8.5 version, it has YouTube downloader feature too. Mobile Media Converter is licensed in GNU GPL v2. Unfortunately, it is not available in Ubuntu official repository. So this is instruction to install it manually in Ubuntu 14.04.

Selene is a GUI audio/video converter application for converting files to many multimedia formats. It can handle MP3, OGG, MP4, WEBM, and so on. Here the instructions about how to install Selene in Ubuntu via PPA. The PPA provides Selene for 12.04, 14.04, until 16.04. Thanks for teejee for providing this PPA.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:teejee2008/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install selene

Explanation: those three commands set a new repository, resync the repository setting, and the install selene. It needs to download about 18 MB data in our Ubuntu 14.04. Selene is not available in official Ubuntu repository for now, so installing it from PPA is the only way (easy way).

As promised before, today Canonical announces the mobile version of Ubuntu "Ubuntu for phones". This mobile version of Ubuntu was built around the existing Android kernel and drivers but it doesn't use Java Virtual Machine to achieve the full power of the phone. Canonical said that it's easy to vendors that already make device for Android to adopt Ubuntu on their devices. Well, obviously there will be more competitions around mobile phone OS in the market, Android, Windows Phone, Firefox OS, iPhone, and Android for phones :D

"Tears of Steel" was realized with crowd-funding by users of the open source 3D creation tool Blender. Target was to improve and test a complete open and free pipeline for visual effects in film - and to make a compelling sci-fi film in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The film itself, and all raw material used for making it, have been released under the Creatieve Commons 3.0 Attribution license.
Tears of Steel sponsored by Google, NVIDIA, Hewlett-Packard Workstations and other companies. The film takes 12 minutes to play, and it's suitable for 12 years and older. Well, a good free movie for this weekend, right? :)

Well, if you are familiar with VLC Media Player and love it, you should give VLMC (VideoLAN Movie Creator) a try when making video. VLMC is created by VideoLAN team.

VideoLAN Movie Creator is a non-linear editing software for video creation based on libVLC and running on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X! It is a free software distributed under the terms of the GPL v2.

I'm sorry from writing non Ubuntu-related post, but it's still around Linux and its open-source project. Well, if you have a Windows operating system and want to impress your friends by modifying the Windows interface you should try KDE on Windows. KDE on Windows Initiative is an ongoing project trying to port KDE applications to Microsoft Windows operating system. This project currently supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. But, there is one people who tried this project on Windows 8. Here is the video:

Please take a note that KDE on Windows is not yet in a final state, some applications may be unsuitable for daily usage and of course you might encounter some bugs.

Well, if you are interested in it, please refer to KDE on Windows official website to get the Windows installer, latest news, and supports.

Regards :)
