Persepolis and Download Navi are two download manager apps for Ubuntu and Android, respectively. They can help the users accelerate download speed and keep track of what files had been saved. This tutorial will explain how to use them to download files from the internet after installing them to desktop and phone. I hope this tutorial helps Ubuntu users who have computer and phone altogether.

Enjoying YouTube without YouTube means you can watch and download all videos from it everywhere by alternative ways so that you don't run nonfree software or surrender your privacy. There are good news I want to share with you as there are already Invidious and CloudTube for computer users while NewPipe for phone users. They are all free libre open source software developed by community you can trust. I am happy with these solution so I want you to share my happiness as well. Enjoy!

Do you remember Invidious Everywhere? Since early September Invidio.us is unfortunately officially closed and the Invidious web software development is now seeking for new maintainer. Thank you Omarroth for this incredibly good YouTube front end for your hard works help people and me truly a lot for these years. However, there is a good news, it is CloudTube now an alternative to Invidious so we can watch YouTube right in the web browser without being tracked nor running nonfree javascript. Watch for example Introducing GNOME Orbis that was published lately. Thanks to Trisquel Forum's discussion, I discovered it as soon as I found Invidious for some reason do not work for me anymore. Don't miss invaluable info here and here as well. Now everybody capable can consider to host CloudTube or join the development using Python programming language or help fund by donating.

Let's enjoy CloudTube!

Finally, I can watch YouTube videos embedded in any website without worrying about things like nonfree JavaScript, ads, and trackers (explained below). Thanks to Invidious I could search & watch all YouTube videos without worry. Thanks to Invidition addon all YouTube frames on all websites automatically turned into Invidious instead. Thanks to both, I can download any YouTube video just by right-click > Save Video As. This is simply nice experience for me I wish to share with you. Enjoy!

Do you know Invidious? On Invidious, you can watch all YouTube videos safely and without ads with ability to download all of them. Technically, it means Invidious acts as an intermediary between you and YouTube and plays videos without JavaScript. This also means privacy, that is Google will not be able to record you! But the problem is all YouTube links on the net linked to youtube.com and not invidio.us. Many people still don't know Indivious as well. So we always need to rewrite every link to invidio.us to watch every video. This makes life difficult. Fortunately, thanks to several Firefox addons below, we can automatically change all youtube link to invidious instead, even the embed ones on webpages and social medias! This makes life easy. Finally, Invidious is free software licensed under GNU AGPL you can have the source code from GitHub. Let's make Indivious everywhere!

Addons

Here are several free software licensed addons you could use but I suggest you try the first one below.

Use Example

Link: every video URL on every webpage will automatically changed to Invidious URL instead of YouTube URL. When you click one, you open Invidious and not YouTube.

Embed: every embedded video on every webpage will automatically turned into Invidious embed frame, not YouTube's anymore.

Acknowledgement

Thank you omarroth for creating Invidious (the software) and make it online for us (the service). Thank you YouTube and its community for providing all the actual videos online so we can watch and download them.

My Personal View

I support Degoogle Movement as being done by PrivacyToolsIO, DeGoogle at Reddit, and such other communities. One among most difficult things for us to leave from Google is YouTube, of course. Personally, I found Invidious from Trisquel forum, a community of a 100% free software operating system, as they really actively talk about relationship between privacy and free software. Once I know it, I felt very happy, I do not need to browse YouTube anymore. And I think using Invidious is much more better than fussing around with YouTube alternatives like PeerTube or BitChute services. Finally, enjoy YouTube everywhere without nonfree Javascript!

(Ubuntu 19.04 plays an Invidious video and shows Privacy from its System Settings)

To accompany the WTDAI article, I write this one to sum up 12 things related to user's privacy on Ubuntu 19.04. You will find here tips for internet privacy, like DNSCrypt and Enigmail, and tips for system privacy, like Screen Lock and Password Management. You will also find my recommendations for network services, like Invidious to replace YouTube, and more. I tried to make them short and easy for you. I hope this list useful and practical for everybody new in both Ubuntu and privacy things. Last but not least, privacy is a very broad field and I left more readings in the end for you to learn more. Finally, happy working!
