Solutions to Install Newer Apps on Older Ubuntu Versions

Do you still use an older or unsupported Ubuntu on your computer? Don't want to upgrade for some reason? Then, you might want to update or install some new applications but you find it impossible. Good news for you! There are several solutions to fulfill these needs, which are, by making use of Flatpaks, AppImages and Snaps (let's call them FAIS for easier naming). Let's see how FAIS help us to run latest versions of LibreOffice, OnlyOffice, FreeCAD, Nextcloud Server some games and many more on Xenial Xerus (16.04 LTS) as the following. We deliberately chose Xenial so you can be sure that running them on newer Ubuntu will work.

My Ubuntu Reached EOL, What Should I Do?

 
(Unsupported Ubuntu release, i.e. version 14.10 Utopic, can install programs once again)

If your Ubuntu version reached its End of Life (EOL), it will not install software anymore. You can still use the system without time limit but you cannot get more applications nor security updates. This article explains with example to take care of Ubuntu 14.10 "Utopic Unicorn" which has been EOL since 2015 so it can install programs once again (but without updates). This tutorial can be used for other EOLed versions of Ubuntu for example 10.10 or 17.04. I hope this helps.

What To Do After Ubuntu 16.10 "Yakkety Yak" Got EOL


Ubuntu 16.10 "Yakkety Yak" has reached End Of Life (EOL) stage at Friday 20 July 2017. This means the users won't receive official security updates from Canonical anymore. This leaves Yakkety users at least two choices, to stay at Yakkety (with using old-release repo) or to upgrade to 17.04 Zesty Zapus (by upgrading). This article explains shortly those two choices.
