I have written a post about using Pidgin to chat and file transfer over Local Area Network (LAN) with some tricks. There is another application which can do file transfer over LAN easily, just install it on both computers, and you are ready to go. Introducing Nitroshare!

NitroShare is designed to be hassle-free in every aspect. Just install the application on any machine running Ubuntu or Windows and you're all set. Each machine should discover all of the other machines on the local network. The application integrates with the operating system, using application indicators on Ubuntu and the system tray on Windows.
Installing Nitroshare
Ubuntu users can install Nitroshare easily by running this command:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:george-edison55/nitroshare -y
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install nitroshare
Nitroshare is available for Windows users too, so Ubuntu users can share files between them on Local Area Network, please download the installer for Windows here.

Once installed, run Nitroshare and you will get a simple widget on Desktop. Drag and drop the file you want to share on top of it. You will be prompted to choose the target that the file will be sent to.

Nitroshare comes with a Settings windows, so you can change the name of computer, location of received file, some security and behavior related stuff.

Enjoy :)
