This tutorial will help you install Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic Minotaur into your computer or laptop. It includes methods most of you will need like dualbooting, UEFI and using external disk drive. It is easy to follow and hopefully risk-free because we will use an empty USB flash drive as hard disk. Now let's start the practice. Good luck!
Requirements
1 x computer or laptop with Intel Celeron 2GB or more.
1 x Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic Minotaur
1 x software like Unetbootin to create bootable medium
1 x USB flash drive as the bootable medium
1 x USB flash drive as the hard disk drive
1 x keyboard
1 x mouse (or touchpad for laptop)
As an example, we use the following specification practicing this tutorial:
- Lenovo ThinkPad T430 with battery power (a 2012 laptop)
- UEFI System (that means GPT and EFI are mandatory)
- Dualboot method (that means one computer two OSes or more)
- A 16GB flash drive as Ubuntu bootable medium
- A 32GB flash drive as target hard disk (formatted as GPT)
- A 300MB EFI system partition
- A 1GB SWAP partition
- A 30GB ROOT partition (also called slash)
- We do not use hard disk drive at all.
Preparations
1. Download Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic Minotaur.
2. Verify if your copy of ISO image file is valid.
3. Create a USB bootable using a tool like Unetbootin.
4. Boot your computer into USB.
5. Start seeing Ubuntu 23.10 on your computer screen and ready for Step 1 below.
6. Plug your target USB flash drive into your computer and format it as GPT using GNOME Disk Utility (Disks on the application menu). In our example, as explained below, it is the 32GB empty flash drive we formatted into GUID Partition Table like picture below. Don't know how to do it? Learn Disk Utility Tutorial.
Step 1
Please make sure your target USB flash drive is already plugged in.
Run Install Ubuntu on the desktop.
Select language "English" and click Next.
Step 2
Select keyboard layout English (US) and click Next.
Step 3
Select "I don't want to connect ... " and click Next.
Step 4
Select "Full Installation" and click Next.
Step 5
Select "Manual Partitioning" (in the past "Something Else") and click Next.
Step 6
Enter Manual Partitioning step.
In this step, you will create 3 disk partitions as the storage of your Ubuntu system. In our example, /dev/sda is our hard disk drive, /dev/sdb is our bootable USB (ignore it), and /dev/sdc is our empty flash drive as the target. Here you should be able to recognize your target storage.
Step 6. 1. Create Swap Partition
Select free space under /dev/sdc (or your target).
Click Plus Button ( + ).
A dialog will show.
Fill the size 1000 MB.
Fill the use as SWAP.
Click OK.
Step 6.2. Create System Partition
Select free space left under /dev/sdc (or your target).
Click Plus Button ( + ).
A dialog will show.
Leave the size unchanged.
Fill the use as EXT2 (for installation into flash drive) or EXT4 (for installation into hard disk drive).
Fill the mount point a slash character ( / ).
Click OK.
Step 6.3. Create EFI Partition
The EFI partition will automatically be created in your target and you do not need to do anything. In this step, you should have a total of 3 partitions (swap, efi and slash). See example below.
Step 6.4. Select Bootloader Position
Under the last option "Device for boot loader installation", select your target disk. In our example, it is /dev/sdc. See previous picture.
Step 6.5. Click Next
Step 6.6. Evaluate Installation Plan
A dialog will show a summary of things to be formatted (deleted).
Please carefully read and evaluate if everything is correct and no one of your hard disk partition like Windows or Data mentioned in it. A correct summary will look like below.
Once everything is okay, click Install.
Step 7
Select your region and city. In our example, it is Asia/Jakarta. This will determine your time, language, money currency and numbering format.
Create your username, password, and computer name.
Select one color theme most suitable to you. In our example, we leave the default option unchanged.
Step 9
Wait for the installation process to finish. In our example, it needs more or less 30 minutes (half an hour) total time to finish with a 32GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade as the hard disk drive. Please enjoy the Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic Minotaur introduction along the proces. We drink a cup of Java coffee for this.
Once finished, click Restart Now on the Installation Finished dialog.
Once restarted, Ubuntu will show a message "Please remove installation medium". For the last time, unplug your bootable flash drive (careful not to remove the target drive) and press ENTER.
Step 10
Finished. Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic Minotaur is installed on your computer.
