This tutorial explains how you can install Cinelerra-GG and Natron on Ubuntu version 16.04 LTS up to 21.10. Cinelerra's a professional video editor and Natron's a compositing + special effects software available for GNU/Linux. Both are Free Software, Libre and Open Source. Now let's start it.

Installing Cinelerra

This works for 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus and 21.10 Impish Indri. Please note that Cinelerra-GG is also called CinGG.

1. Visit the download page cinelerra-gg.org/downloads.

2. Visit the AppImage download link.

3. Download one CinGG file from the available files the newest one by date.

  • If your computer is 32-bit, select the i386 one.
  • If yours is 64-bit select the x86_64 one.

4. You downloaded a file named CinGG-<version>.AppImage.

5. Give it executable permission then double-click it.

6. Cinelerra runs.

7. Use Alacarte to install this AppImage into applications menu.

Once installed, run Cinelerra and it should looks like below. The video displayed being edited on Cinelerra is The Alps 4K by Scenic Relaxation downloaded from YouTube.

Install Natron

This works also at Ubuntu as old as 16.04 LTS and as new as 21.10 Impish Indri thanks to Snapcraft.

1. Do upgrade your Snap software installer by this command line:

sudo apt-get install snapd

$ example

2. Install Natron Compositing Software:

sudo snap install natron

$ example

3. Natron is installed.

Once installed, run Natron and it should looks like below. The video compositing viewed is Spaceship, a 3D animation example created with Blender and can be downloaded freely at the website under Samples section.

We can confirm these two great software work on Xenial Xerus as well.

Lastly, we would love to acknowledge and say thanks to all Cinelerra developers and contributors for making the best video editor for GNU/Linux users and to Martin Wimpress, the Ubuntu MATE Project leader, who've made Natron available at Snapcraft. Happy editing!
