Discover is the application store of Kubuntu. Discover is part of KDE Applications and closely related to Plasma. By using Discover, Kubuntu user can show what programs and games are available to choose, view their details, install and remove any of them as well as update the whole system. We introduce Discover to new users to help them getting started and be productive with Kubuntu. You can also find this as a part of our series of Kubuntu Default Applications. Description


Discover (also known as Plasma Discover) is a program preinstalled on Kubuntu to manage user's installed applications and games, search and install new ones, and update the whole system.

Purposes


  • Showing installed programs on Kubuntu system.
  • Showing every program's logo, pictures, rating and description. 
  • Search for more programs.
  • Install new programs.
  • Update programs.
  • Update the whole system.
  • Manage repositories (sources of installation).
  • Serving the same purposes of APT in form of graphical user interface (GUI).

Commands and Integration with Kubuntu Desktop

 

One excellent example of how Discover can help a Kubuntu user is as the following:

1. Visit https://apps.kde.org.

2. Select an application, for example the first one there, Okular

3. Click "Install on Linux" button.

4. Discover should open and show Okular in it. Done. 


Discover supports the following application store websites:

- apps.kde.org (as mentioned above)

- store.kde.org (for AppImages)

- snapcraft.io (for Snap packages)

- flathub.org (for Flatpak packages)


Supported Package Formats


DEB packages (default).

Snap packages (default).

Flatpak packages (requires additional programs).

AppImages.

KDE Applets.


Location on the Screen and System


Discover can be found in the application launcher.

Discover can be found via Alt+F2 -> type discover -> Enter.

Discover can be run from command line: $ plasma-discover

Discover may also be available as a shortcut icon on desktop.

Discover may also be available as a shortcut or pinned on panel.


Documentation and User Manual for Discover


There is no User Manual documentation for Discover (at least for now) unlike most of other KDE applications. If you think you can help, see References section below to contribute to The Discover Project.
