This tutorial explains how to quickly voice and video call with friends and family using XMPP and Matrix telecommunication services. This tutorial's aimed for people who want easy calls without technical knowledge especially school teachers and computing beginners. Thus, we will use Movim and Schildi via web browser so we can call everywhere both on desktop and mobile. Let's do it.

Requirements

To call, you need to fulfill the followings:

  • Registered accounts: each one of you, friends and family must have account from the telecommunication service. Do register to either one of XMPP or Matrix.
  • Web browser: Firefox or Chromium or Safari to access the service. Other browsers might do not support video call.
  • Microphone and/or camera: to establish voice and/or video call. Laptops generally already fulfilling this.

Once all requirements OK, please do the following steps.

Step 1. Registration

To call via XMPP or Matrix, each person should register for an account if he/she does not have an account yet. The good things are: registration price is free (gratis) and phone number / email address is not required.

 

Step 2. Login

XMPP: visit mov.im → login with your username and password → Movim chat will open → you are ready to communicate.

Matrix: visit app.schildi.chat → login with your username and password → Schildi Chat will open → you are ready to communicate.

⭐ BONUS: for long time XMPP users, if you already registered an account on server other than Movim, you can login to Movim with your XMPP account. For example, if you are registered to Jabber, Xabber or Conversations service, then you can use that account without registering a new one.

 

Step 3. Add Contacts

To call your friend of family, you should have their contacts first.

XMPP: visit your Movim chat → click Plus button → type your friend's account in the contact finder → add him/her.

Matrix: visit your Schildi Chat → click Start Chat button → type your friend's account in the people finder → click Go.


Step 4. Voice Call

To call, you push Call button on a contact.

XMPP: click a contact → click telephone handle button to the top → wait your friend to accept → talk.


Matrix: click a contact → click telephone handle button → wait your friend to accept → talk → click red button to end call.


Step 5. Video Call

To call, you push Camera button on a contact.

XMPP: click a contact → click telephone handle button to the top → wait for your friend to accept → allow microphone and camera access → talk.
Matrix: click a contact → click telephone handle button → allow microphone and camera access if asked → wait your friend to accept → talk.

 

Step 6. Conference

Only Matrix allows you to voice / video conference at the moment. To conference, you need to invite 2 contacts or more then Call together.

Matrix: on a contact, click Room Info → click '2 people' → click Invite to this room → select one of your friends or family → added → click Call or Camera button → wait for participants to join → talk together.

7. Screen Sharing

Lastly, you can share your computer screen by firstly do video call or conference then click the button. This  feature is mostly useful for teachers or technical support staffs.

XMPP: video call a contact → click Share Screen button → select and allow Entire screen → click same button to disable Screen Sharing.
Matrix: video call a contact → click Share Screen button → select and allow Entire Screen → click same button to disable Screen Sharing.
